Christianity Should Feel MORE Like Jesus... Not Less.
Forget Christmas, can we please try and Keep Christ in CHRISTIAN!?
Main point of this post?
I launched a new podcast last week. It’s great. You should check it out.
Episode One is already out: Apple Podcast or Spotify or Substack.
Episode Two drops tomorrow!
Keep reading for more..
As a serious practitioner of Christianity for 25 years now, I think I’m on good authority when I say:
Christianity should look and sound and feel more like Jesus… not less so.
And yet, with the ascendency of the MAGA inspired evangelicalism of the past decade, more and more what passes for “Christian” these days (at least in the public sphere) seems less and less connected to Jesus.
You may recall my efforts to show this confusing gap when I compared Franklin Graham’s prayer at Trump’s inauguration to Marian Budde’s message delivered the very next day.
Since then (late January) I keep having the following thought:
Can we please try and Keep Christ in Christian?
Obviously this is a play off the infamous “Keep Christ in Christmas” bumper stickers and yard signs. But for me this sentiment is about so much more than virtue signaling a disdain for how commercialism has robbed a sacred holiday of meaning.
For me this is truly the heart of the thing.
If your expression and your practice of Christianity doesn’t look, sound, or feel like the Way of Jesus, then something is most certainly amiss.
For months now I’ve wanted to write about this idea and articulate a handful of the clear and obvious teachings and example of Jesus that are lacking in much of modern day Christianity.
But here’s the thing… I’m already writing about too many topics here on Perspective Shift (eg, divorce; being a pastor; mushrooms; friendship; what it means to love Jesus; why silently LGBTQ affirming pastors should speak up already, and more).
Therefore instead of writing on this topic, I’ve decided to podcast about it.
And instead of podcasting solo, I’ve brought in a couple friends to do it with me, and make it even better!
